Solar Fountains

Consumer's source for solar fountain tips and advice.

One of the best ways to create an oasis in your backyard is to create a solar pond fountain. These can be as large or ornate as you would like them to be. They provide a certain ambiance to the garden and help to provide a relaxing sound while you are outside reading your favorite book or watching the kids play.

The easiest way to set these up is to purchase one that is already assembled. These pre made units come with a floating pump and solar cells built into it. This might be the easiest method – but it is not the cheapest. If you are on a tight budget and want to have money to use elsewhere around the garden than why not build one?

To start you need to purchase a submersible fountain pump. This is what gives the water the right height and spray pattern that you will want to use. For a more dramatic effect you can purchase a spray nozzle to use on the pump if it does not already come with one.

The solar cell panel needs to be large enough to power the pump. You will want to place it in an area where it cannot be seen – but also where it will receive the most amount of sun throughout the day. Most people will have to secure it to a pole nearby or onto the house so that no trees will be in the way. Purchase a backup battery that will store the energy and keep the fountain running during the night.

Set up the solar cells. Make sure that they are secured tightly and there is no risk of them falling off. Make sure that the wiring is secured into the backup battery. The battery should be secured beneath the panels.

Connect one end of the underwater wiring to the solar cell panel and the other to the pump. Carefully place the pump at the bottom of the pond fountain. Place stones and rocks around it to keep it secure. Fill it with water, turn everything on, and enjoy your new fountain.
